I havn’t done this for a couple years and the last time I did I used Plesk and absolutely hated it. I am so confused right now.

I bought my domain.
I have everything confirmed.
I bought Linux hosting.

How do I get into Linux to get everything started? I was sent an email to show me how to USE Linux but now how to get into it. I dont mean to sound like a newb but I am so frustrated.

I am creating a website in the .net framework, but searching my control panel and all of yahoo help, I can’t find the answer.

It would be windows as it’s .net framework. Find out which control panel s/w is used by yahoo. It will give you a clue to access the control panel

Yeah Maybe you should check your question before asking in the category! That would be really helpful.

I am using JSPs .

Also, I couldn’t understand what you were talking about licensing ? I spoke to my ISP and they said web hosting is allowed.

Tomcat is a specialized extension of apache meant to enable server-side java programming.

The first question is whether you need this, or whether a more standard version of apache will work.

Are you doing JSP or Java Servlets? If not, you don’t need tomcat, and regular apache will do.

Will this computer be a dedicated server? That is, does it have a permanent IP address and a solid web connection? If you’re using a typical home-based DSL / cable hookup, the answer is probably no to both questions. (In fact, your license agreement probably forbids you from setting up a home-based server for actual hosting.) Of course, if you’re just setting it up for development or practice and you don’t do any actual hosting on it, there’s no problem. (That’s what I do with my laptop.)

The easiest way to practice with tomcat is to use the netbeans IDE, which includes a copy of tomcat and runs it when you need it. Get it from sun.java.com.

You can also download tomcat and install it on your machine if you wish.

If you don’t need java capability, just go with apache. It may already be installed on your machine (depending on your distro) and it’s far better supported.

Good luck!

I set up hosting on GoDaddy and they ask you to choose. My web guy said to go with Linux. What does this mean and what is the difference? Is it easier for me to make changes if it’s Windows and that’s the kind of PC I have, or does it only have to do with the type of PC my web guy used to design the site? Thanks a lot!

Linux and Windows are two groups of packages offered by hosting companies. Linux is usually the cheaper solution but there is no difference in performance regardless of price, its just that Windows license is expensive.

As far as WHICH ONE TO CHOOSE, it makes no difference at all if you have a static HTML website. It only matters if you want to create a dynamic database driven website (i.e. requires server side programming in some way). With dynamic websites, Windows platform offers you ASP/ASP.NET + MS SQL SERVER/MS ACCESS support; where as Linux platform offers PHP/PERL + MySQL support. If you don’t need to use any of the above technologies, go for Linux which is usually cheaper.

What is the cheapest dedicated Linux server hosting package available in Chicago? I’m looking for something similar to fastservers.net, but cheaper.
The data center and servers MUST be physically located in Chicago for my purposes.
Thanks
Thanks, but cihost.com is pretty expensive too, even worse than fastservers.net.

check cihost.com , they have Chicago datacenter
